Matson Terminals provides dedicated terminal operations for Matson's ocean transportation services throughout the state of Hawaii. The company's 108-acre facility at Sand Island in Honolulu is the hub of all Matson operations, and ensures Matson delivers efficient and reliable cargo throughput to and from Hawaii. In addition to the Sand Island facility, Matson Terminals operates a dedicated roll on/roll off (ro-ro) terminal in Honolulu Harbor, as well as stevedoring services for the major ports of Kahului, Maui; Nawiliwili, Kauai; and Hilo and Kawaihae on the Big Island of Hawaii. Matson Terminals focuses on achieving the highest levels of customer service for an island economy that relies heavily on ocean transportation to support its day-to-day business activities. Matson's customers benefit from Matson Terminals' fast truck turn times, premium vessel productivity, "just in time" cargo availability and advanced information management systems. By utilizing GPS technology, Matson Terminals has streamlined the movement of cargo through its facilities with innovations such as Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) for gate processing and an Electronic Interchange Ticket (EIT) system for transmitting information to truckers picking up or delivering freight to Matson's facility. GPS technology also has been applied to container handling equipment at the terminal, providing accurate, real-time information that tracks the movement of virtually all activities at the container yard.
Founded in 1921, Matson Terminals had a key role in the development of containerization in the Pacific. Shoreside innovations introduced by Matson Terminals included the world's first A-frame gantry cranes, which was erected in 1959 in Alameda, California and became the prototype for container cranes. In addition, Matson introduced the first transtainer by Paceco and the first straddle carrier in the world by Clark Ross - both developed to meet Matson specifications.
Today, Matson's West Coast facilities are managed by SSA Terminals, LLC ("SSAT"), a joint venture of Matson and SSA Marine. In addition to its other terminal operations on the U.S. Pacific Coast, SSAT provides dedicated terminal services for Matson in the ports of Long Beach, Oakland and Seattle.
